Winter on the East Coast is never a joke. I, however, am one of those knuckleheads who actually care abouut what I look like when it gets cold out. (I mean, damn, it’s New York, not Antarctica.) The older I get, the better at layering I get, I think. (Chock it up to trial and error.) I really love this outfit because I get to show off layers with different textures and lengths, but keep everything cohesive with the color palette. Nothing is really off limits when it comes to mixing and matching pieces. It’s kind of like a fun sartorial puzzle that has your closet looking like a bomb hit it after you’ve come up with a strong fit. (Or maybe that’s just me?)
Alright class, please take your seats. I’m Professor Joseph and I’ll be instructing Advanced Layering 202 this semester. By now you already know the basics of dressing up for winter. I mean anyone can throw a sweater over a shirt and perhaps a vest if they’re feeling adventurous. Personally, I’m more of a jacket on jacket type of guy. (Aka obnoxious) The key to mastering to pieces of outerwear is to make sure they compliment and not counteract each other. In laymen’s terms get your fit, length, and materials right before you go outside looking like a goodwill bin. (Wait actually that sounds pretty cool…brb)
I’m no stranger to the Canadian Tuxedo. I’m also no stranger to a distressed denim moment (Exhibit A, B, & C). All that being said I decided to mix both of these trends in this post. If you’re doing double denim look you want to aim for Kanye in FourFiveSeconds and not Justin Timberlake at the 2001 AMAs. To do so, you’ll need an outfit buffer to separate the jean on jean material like this simple sweatshirt. As far as accessories, you can’t go wrong with a great pair of boots and a hat. (A beanie can also suffice if you’re in the right climate.) And there you have it, the secret to achieving the perfect urban cowboy look.
According to Chinese astrology I was born under the Year of the Goat, the metal goat to be exact. I don’t know what that means but Google says that makes me wise, business oriented, and good at organization/stability. (2 of 3 ain’t bad, right?) That goes all to say that I’m completely in love with this limited edition flight jacket from Alpha bearing the goat in gold. Speaking of goats and GOATS, the greatest thing in my life right now is underlayering. (I know I have a sad life, but mind your business.) In honor of the new lunar year I challenge ya’ll to play with proportions and try out a tiered look.
